Meta tags are HTML elements placed inside the head section of a page that provide information about the page to search engines and social media platforms. They do not appear on the page itself but affect how the page appears in search results and when shared on social media.
The most important meta tags for SEO are the title tag and the meta description. The title tag appears as the clickable headline in search results. The meta description appears below the title as a brief summary. While the description is not a direct ranking factor, a well-written one improves click-through rate which does affect rankings.
Open Graph tags control how your page looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social platforms. The og:image tag is particularly important because posts with images get significantly more engagement than those without. Use an image that is at least 1200 by 630 pixels for best results.
Twitter Card tags control how your page appears when shared on Twitter or X. The summary_large_image card type shows a large image above the title and description. The summary type shows a small thumbnail to the left of the text.
Keep title tags under 60 characters. Google truncates titles longer than about 580 pixels which is roughly 60 characters. The most important keywords should come first in the title.
Keep meta descriptions under 160 characters. Google truncates longer descriptions. A good description summarises the page content and includes a reason to click through from the search result.
The keywords meta tag has not been used by Google for ranking since around 2009. Do not spend time on it. Focus on the title and description instead which do affect click-through rates from search results.
